Unilever Plc has issued a voluntary customer-level product recall of certain dry shampoo lot codes produced before October 2021. The recalled dry shampoo aerosols were from Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head) and TRESemmé. According to the company statement, the reason for the recall is potentially high levels of benzene. The company did not disclose the amount of benzene found in the products, but said it was recalling them out of an abundance of caution.

What is a dry shampoo?

According to the Collins dictionary, dry shampoo is a product in the form of a powder or spray that you can use to clean the hair without getting it wet. According to the Cleveland Clinic, these alcohol- or starch-based sprays remove grease and oils from hair and add volume. Some dry shampoos have a spray while others have tinted powder to match hair color.

Health hazard of dry shampoo

Stating the health risk, Unilever said: ‘Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and can lead to cancers, including leukemia and bone marrow blood cancer and life-threatening blood disorders. Benzene is ubiquitous in the environment. Humans around the world are exposed to it internally and externally from multiple sources on a daily basis.”

The FDA has stated that “daily exposure to benzene in recalled products at levels detected in testing is not expected to result in adverse health consequences.” Yet the agency also said exposure to benzene can lead to leukemia and other blood cancers.

Cleveland Clinic said dry shampoo shouldn’t be used every few days. Excessive or excessive use of dry shampoo can irritate your scalp, cause breakage and impact hair growth.

Other products containing aerosols recalled earlier

This isn’t the first time that spray dry shampoo has been identified as a problem. By December 2021, P&G had tested its entire portfolio of aerosol products following Valisure’s findings, after which it recalled its Pantene and Herbal Essences dry shampoos citing benzene contamination.

“Given what we have seen, it unfortunately makes sense that other categories of consumer products, such as aerosol dry shampoos, could be heavily impacted by benzene contamination and we are actively investigating this area,” said said Valisure Managing Director David Light.

As Bloomberg reported, over the past year and a half, a number of aerosol sunscreens have been pulled from shelves, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Neutrogena, Edgewell Personal Care Co.’s Banana Boat, and Coppertone. from Beiersdorf AG, as well as spray antiperspirants. like Procter & Gamble Co.’s Secret and Old Spice and Unilever’s Suave. The recalls were triggered by the discovery of benzene in these products by a testing lab called Valisure, based in New Haven, Connecticut, from May 2021.
