Are you about to use some hair dye you bought in college and recently found in an alcove hidden under the sink? You think âall these chemicals will survive us all, so why not? Or do you think, “What if I dye your hair black and it comes out orange?” We had no idea. On the one hand, what is the harm? On the other, there could be harm! So we did what we always do and asked the experts. In this case, we turned to one of the kings of color, Mane Master, and famous colorist Guy Tang to answer the age-old question: Does hair dye expire?
So, does the hair dye expire?
Let’s get right to the point. âYes, the hair dye is expiring,â Guy says. We would like to formally congratulate all the winners of the bet on the expiration of hair dyes.
âCheck the PAO symbol on the hair coloring box to determine how long it is good after opening,â he shares. âThe PAO symbol looks like a small open jar with a number representing the number of monthsâ the hair dye will last.
What about unopened hair dye?
Not everyone goes through color so quickly, but in general you want to use up your stash. Remember to buy what you will actually need or use so you don’t create waste. âI use a lot of hair colors all the time,â Guy exclaims. “How quickly I use it depends on the type of hair techniques I’m doing on my clients at that time.”
Instead, the main difference between a fresh hair dye and an older dye is less in the date and more in the fact that it is still sealed. âYou can tell the difference between unopened and open hair color. Once opened, the coloring cream will oxidize a bit, âhe notes.
Does it depend on the brand?
The differences do not end there and are nuanced. âThere are differences between every hair color brand, both professional and commercial,â Guy explains. âThe differences are in each formula,â he continues. “As with the #mydentity color, we’ve included a scent of lavender for a spa-style salon experience and ingredients to help protect your hair color from heat fading and add shine.” So shop wisely and don’t push your hair dye to the limit – fresh and new products will generate better results and give you peace of mind. But, we don’t judge.
